Newnan, GA, May, 2008: Britain’s legendary motorcycle manufacturer, Triumph, is steeped in the history of motorcycling yet remains at the forefront of engineering with some of the most sophisticated production facilities in the world. One of Triumph’s best-loved bikes, the Bonneville, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in Summer 2008.

Cleverly blending traditional British style and charismatic performance, the Triumph Bonneville is the perfect roadster and a modern design classic. Its unique looks and exhilarating riding experience have made the Bonneville the motorcycle of choice for generations of fast-living individuals including screen idols from Steve McQueen, James Dean and Marlon Brando, through to George Clooney and Nicholas Cage.

Triumph is marking the occasion by producing two unique one-off designs for the Bonneville, each conceived by an iconic collaborator, synonymous with style and British motorcycling: Hollywood star Ewan McGregor and designer of high-end motorcycling fashion, Belstaff.

Renowned motorcycle enthusiast, Ewan McGregor, has created a design that reflects the Bonneville’s rich heritage. The design incorporates a copper-plated tank, with black waxed cotton by Belstaff on the seat and side panel and is inspired by one of his own vintage bikes, as well as his love of the legendary motorcycle enthusiast (and Triumph rider), Steve McQueen.

Ewan explains, “I wanted to use a traditional waxed cotton material as it has such a resonance with the history of style in motorcycling and mix it with the tradition of coppering tanks. I am a huge fan of Steve McQueen and his films from the 1960s, and the font that I have chosen for the Triumph logo harks back to that golden era of biking.

“This is such an exciting project for me – the Bonneville has to be the ultimate in iconic British motorcycles, so the chance to create my very own design and see it through to production is amazing.”

Belstaff, the leading designer of motorcycling fashion, is also producing a bespoke design of the Bonneville incorporating a sophisticated black and gold color scheme synonymous with the fashion brand’s identity. The design also includes a gold seat cowl and a black and gold pannier bag. In addition Belstaff is also creating a limited-edition biker style jacket to mark the anniversary. Еще достойнем внимания элементом является регулируемое седло, ловко закрывающее амортизатор, благодаря которому мотоцикл имеет жесткую раму. То есть с точки зрения формы Bobber Black – так же, как предшественник, – ставит на колени.

ЧЕРНЫЙ ЛУЧШЕ

Тест-драйв выявил несколько недостатков Боббера. В основном речь шла о тормозах, которые были не слишком согнуты и требовали использования большой силы. К счастью, в версии Black они изменились, потому что на переднем колесе работают два диска диаметром 310 мм, в то время как один суппорт Nissin заменили плавающие суппорты Brembo. Еще одно отличие – передняя подвеска. Bobber Black имеет диаметр отсека вилки на 6 мм шире – 47 мм, а классическая вилка Kayaba из более ранней версии заменена, чтобы обеспечить большую жесткость, более сильное демпфирование и больший запас вилки Showa. Диаметр переднего колеса меньше – вместо 19 оно теперь составляет 16 дюймов , а шина шире – 130 / 90-16 вместо 130 / 90-19. Заднее осталось без изменений – 150 / 80-16. Мотоцикл также получил светодиодные фары и круиз-контроль.

Постоянная скорость? Нет проблем, достаточно нажать расположенную рядом с ролгазом кнопку круиз-контроля.

Если эти изменения влияют на вождения? Пробные поездки по извилистым дорогам вокруг испанской кольцевой развязки показали, что да, и это большой плюс. Начнем с тормозов, которые теперь имеют четкую точку срабатывания. Благодаря этому для достижения достойной эффективности достаточно нажатия двух пальцев. То же самое касается вилки, которая обеспечивает успешный компромисс между комфортом и демпфированием, точно управляет передним колесом и даже при сильном торможении не ныряет слишком глубоко. Задняя часть – что не удивительно – по-прежнему подпрыгивает на разломах и кочках, но давайте договоримся – с ходом амортизатора 77 мм не стоит рассчитывать на чудеса. Несмотря на это, в быстрых и затяжных поворотах боббер Black ведет себя стабильно и уверенно держит траекторию движения.

Лучшие каблуки и вилка, а также удобный руль, способствующий агрессивной езде, соблазнили меня. К сожалению, подножкам мешал асфальт, который я царапал почти на каждом повороте. Однако прежде чем это произойдет, мотоцикл охотно переходит из поворота в поворот, чему способствуют специально разработанные шины Avon Cobra для этой модели. “Обутое” в них переднее колесо нейтрально направляло машину через повороты, и только во время торможения в повороте я почувствовал легкий, но отчетливо четкий момент.

Двигатель? Этот остался прежнем, так что, как и в обычном Боббере, он был источником хорошего настроения для меня. С 1600 об / мин он тянет сильно и решительно, независимо от установленной передачи, а “музыка” из труб ласкает слух. Это происходит до тех пор, пока не будет достигнут максимальный крутящий момент 106 Нм, что составляет около 4000 об / мин. Затем темперамент слегка ослабевает. Это не беспокоило меня, однако, потому что британский твин отличается хорошими манерами, и нет проблем с вождением на 10 кг большей массы.
